Start Planning Now for Winter Break Dec. 17 – Jan. 15

By Sylvia Cranmer, Housing & Dining Services Communications

It’s time to prepare for the end of the semester and Winter Break! This is a busy time of year for all of us – especially for students, who are preoccupied with finishing work for their classes, preparing for finals, and getting ready to leave campus. Some helpful information as students make plans to either stay or leave for Winter Break:

Students who plan to stay in the residence halls for all or part of the break must apply and sign up by noon Wednesday, Dec. 14, via the housing portal. Only Allison, Corbett, Durward, Laurel Village, and Parmelee will be open during Winter Break. Residents of these halls may apply to stay in their current room, and residents of other halls may apply to stay in limited available spaces in these halls. All residents who wish to stay on campus for some or all of the break must apply online by Dec. 14. The cost is $40 per day.

Housing:

  • Residence halls close at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, and re-open Thursday, Jan. 12 at 8 a.m.
  • Online check-out must be completed by each resident prior to leaving for break via the Housing Portal.
  • Students needing housing between Jan. 7 – 11, can request Early Arrival at a cost of $70 per day, which includes housing and $40 in RamCash. Apply through the Break Housing Application (select ”Resources” then “Winter Break Housing Signup”) no later than noon on December 14.
  • If students are not returning to the halls next semester, they must officially check out before leaving for break. Contact the hall office regarding proper check-out procedures. Students may be charged for improper check-out if procedures are not followed.

Dining:

  • Meal swipes for on-campus residents will deactivate at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16, and reactivate at 7 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 12.
  • All dining centers and Grubhub locations will close at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16. Students may use an extra meal swipe to get a to-go container for dinner while there during lunch.
  • Visit the dining website for the most up-to-date dining information.

Bicycles:

Bicycle thefts have increased, so students must take extra precautions to protect their bicycle during break.

  • If possible, take bikes home.
  • If the bike stays on campus, lock it to the bedframe in their room.
  • If it must be left on a rack outside, use a u-lock to attach the wheel and the frame to something that won’t move.
  • Store or ship the bike. The Spoke will store bikes over the break and also offers a tune with that storage. Bikes can also be shipped. Both services are listed on the Spoke website (green buttons) at colostate.edu.

If your student is considering not bringing a vehicle back to campus for the spring semester, remember that there are many alternatives for getting around campus and Fort Collins. Check out CSU Parking and Transportation’s website to learn about options.

Be sure your student makes plans soon and let us know if they’ll stay on campus during break. For more information, visit the Winter Break website. Questions? Contact the Community Desk Manager, Residence Director, Assistant Residence Director, RA, or call the University Housing office at (970) 491-4719.

Did your student have a good experience this year? They can do it again and live on campus next year!

As we wind up the semester, students are chatting about where to live next year. Staying on campus is one great option for returning students, and Winter Break is a great time to have these conversations with your student. There are so many benefits to living on campus, including proximity to all things on campus; an all-inclusive bill with utilities and wifi; 24/7 staff available for academic, social and emotional support, etc. For more information about living options, visit the University Housing website, and keep an eye out for information to be sent home soon about returning to live on campus next year.
