3/09/09 NASPA Presentation
Did you attend our session on Parents and Families during the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) Annual Conference in Seattle? The presentation and handout materials have been uploaded onto the NASPA website! After you login, ensure you've selected the 2009 conference options and use the pull-down menu to find our presentation: Theory to Practice: Helping Parents & Families Understand and Use Student Development Theory. Here are a few of the programs and resources we mentioned in the presentation:
Resources
- Parent and Family Handbook/Calendar - Includes all important CSU dates and provides tips and talking points to help parents and families throughout the academic year.
- CSU Parent and Family Guide - This publication is a great way for us to get information out to parents and families. We print three versions per year through the University Parent Media: a fall version focusing on the fall semester and all upcoming events for parents and families, a winter/spring version focusing on students who are applying to college, and a summer version full of FAQs for incoming students during orientation.
- Working with On-Campus Partners - A great example of working with on-campus partners on CSU's philosophy is shown in the Conflict Resolution and Student Conduct Services brochure. View their brochure here
- Monthly E-Newsletter - Contains copies of past newsletters with information on sophomore year initiatives, mental health resources on campus, parent and family member perspective on student development, and more!
- A Day in the Life of... - Contains information for parents and families on student development from the freshman to senior years at CSU. We are updating it continuously!
Programs
- RAMFAM Association - CSU's active parent and family association. The link includes information on the association's mission and goals, as well as minutes from past meetings.
- Family and Guest Orientation Schedule - This provides an overview of the services provided to parents, families, and guests of students through Orientation and Transitions Programs. The Transitions session on Day 1 of the Family and Guest Orientation Schedule is the 75-minute session to meet parents and families and talk about their excitement for their student and their concerns about sending their student to college.
- Parent and Family Ram Welcome Schedule - The Transitions Part 2 program builds on the summer orientation session material and helps parents and families move through the transition of leaving their student on campus.
- Homecoming and Family Weekend Schedule - This event provides an opportunity for parents and families to come to CSU to celebrate what their student has accomplished in college. Traditionally, we have our largest RAMFAM Association meeting this weekend.
